Tinta Barocca is a grape variety that has been cultivated in the Portuguese Douro Valley for centuries and contributes an important part to the production of high-quality port wines. Until the 19th century it was known as Tinta Grossa. Its origin is not clear, but it is believed that the variety is closely related to the Touriga Franca, which is also used in port wine. Tinta Barocca produces good yields and ripens early, but in the warm Douro Valley it is susceptible to heat damage and leaf wilt. It is also sensitive to powdery mildew and downy mildew. Among the many grape varieties approved for the production of port wine, Tinta Barocca is one of the five most important. While the famous fortified wines involving Tinta Barocca are primarily produced in Portugal, the variety is a valued still wine in South Africa, where it is represented on almost 300 hectares. No other occurrences are known.
