"Only Buffet" Wineries in Vienna
It’s well known that his wines are world-class. What’s less well known is that all of Fritz Wieninger’s wines are biodynamic. The location of the wine tavern is also world-class, offering one of the most spectacular views of the city and the buffet. Tip: Try the daily specials and vegan options.
A project by Juan “Hans” Amador and Fritz “Wien Wein” Wieninger. While enjoying Fritz’s award-winning wines, guests can savor Joseph bread with cheese from the Paznaun Valley, Mangalitza sausages, or liver pâté served in a glass. Spectacular views, small Amador dishes, “Respekt” wines.
Just a few minutes’ walk from Grinzinger Platzl, you can sit in Obermann’s gorgeous garden in the shade of old oleander trees. The wine is organic, and the cold and hot Heurigen buffet has something for everyone. Grilled chicken and duck are available by advance order!
The motto, “Sievering is great,” is brought to life by the Kroiss family through their zest for life, homemade food, and equally delicious—and always fine—Viennese wines. In this old-school establishment, what counts is real food, real wine, and real money. And, of course, real people.
While the view from the Nussberg is already breathtaking, it’s even more spectacular from the Wailand wine tavern, located slightly higher up. The quality of the wines offered here by the well-known journalist is also almost unmatched. It’s all well worth the short climb!
In the southern part of the city, on the edge of the Vienna Woods, lies Wolfgang Hofer’s small but exquisite winery, whose motto is “Wine is poetry in a bottle.” The extensive buffet is complemented by seasonal dishes, paired with white, rosé, and red wines.
Can a Heuriger be chic? Mayer’s certainly is! The view of the city and the Danube is spectacular—and so are the single-vineyard wines. The same goes for the cheese selection, organic chicken schnitzel, hearty snack platters, and much more. They even serve ice cream. Tip: Be sure to make a reservation on weekends!
This charming outdoor wine tavern on the outskirts of Stammersdorf offers more than just excellent wines. In the shade of old vineyard peach trees, you can also enjoy delicious organic products from the nearby Biohof No° 5. And sometimes they even serve Steckerlfisch!
Popular with Austrians and tourists alike, it gets extremely busy during peak season. Nevertheless, you can always find a spot in the historic Arkadenhof—the oldest part of the building dates back to the 17th century. Authentic wines, a lavish buffet.
“Herrgott aus Sta” is one of the most famous songs by the legendary Karl Hodina. He performed here when he was just a little boy—and the restaurant was named in his honor. Roast pork or pork knuckle (by advance order) are served with wine from Leth and Pittnauer.
Vienna’s oldest Heuriger (1740) has welcomed guests such as Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss Sr., the Schrammels, Franz Lehár, Emmerich Kálmán, and Robert Stolz. An impressive buffet, with wine from the owners, Fuhrgassl-Huber. Cozy dining rooms and an idyllic courtyard.
In the shade of the ancient plane tree on the sprawling grounds at the foot of the Bisamberg, guests are served, among other things, generously assembled buffet menus. To accompany them, we recommend a bottle or two of the house’s meticulously crafted “Gemischter Satz.”
Located in the heart of Alt-Ottakring, the business is currently run by the sixth generation of the family. The vines are planted on the Wilhelminen and Heuberg hills, and the multi-award-winning wines are bottled using natural methods. Specialty: half a duck (by advance order).
A family-run farm for 250 years, raising pigs, chickens, rabbits, and more, the Steindls have also been operating the Presshaus since 2010. In the natural garden, guests can enjoy delicacies from the buffet paired with the estate’s own organic wines. Specialties: cream slices and fine brandies.
A small hut, a few benches, colorful lounge chairs. That’s all you need when you’re surrounded by vineyards, with a view of the Danube as it winds gently toward the city. The Johannes Müller City Winery produces magnificent wines, such as Riesling and Pinot Noir.
At “Am Berg,” guests not only enjoy cold dishes—and, by the way, hot ones during celebrations as well—but are also served wines that have been honored with the title “State Champion.” Musical events are also held here regularly. There’s a lovely garden and a quaint wine press house.
The last remaining authentic Viennese wine tavern in Kahlenbergerdorf is still an insider’s secret. Popular choices include Grüner Veltliner, Gemischter Satz, and grape juices. The menu is small and features only cold dishes. Tip: try the legendary Kümmelbraten.
Richard Lentner, the third generation to run the family-owned business on Jedlersdorfer Platz, produces a wide variety of high-quality wines from six hectares of vineyards on the Bisamberg. Idyllic courtyard, homemade cuisine. Also worth noting: the “Gleichgepresste.”
Martin, the owner’s son, guarantees a great atmosphere in the cozy dining room and the sunny outdoor seating area. A cold and hot, seasonally inspired Heurigen buffet, plus eight wines by the glass, are additional highlights. There’s also a covered playhouse for children.
Kierlinger is a name to be reckoned with; wines from the Nussberg’s select vineyards are pure poetry. On hot days, old chestnut and linden trees provide shade. Culinary traditions are celebrated with time-honored family recipes. Must-tries: Kierlinger-Liptauer and Backhendl.
