Four Men Die in Tragic Winemaking Accident in Italy

Four members of the same family have died in a freak winemaking accident in southern Italy.

Four men from the same family have died in a tragic winemaking accident in southern Italy. Local media reported that the victims, who were aged between 45 and 70, were found in a shed used to produce wine which did not have proper ventilation. Three of the victims were found inside a fermentation tank while the fourth was nearby, La Prima Pagina reported.

It appears that the first person was overcome by fumes and the other three then tried to help before succumbing themselves, it said. The fermentation process produces high levels of carbon dioxide gas, creating a health hazard in poorly ventilated facilities. Firefighters also found an unconscious woman at the scene, near the city of Paola in the southern region of Calabria.
