On Tuesday 29 June, the Chicago-based airline placed an order of 270 Boeing and Airbus planes for its ambitious expansion plan
The order of 270 narrow-body aircraft is the biggest aircraft purchase from a U.S. airline in the past decade, and it shows United's optimism about post-covid travel. “The leisure business is already back to 100%. Business travel is on the rebound. We have full faith and confidence in that recovery,” said chief commercial officer Andrew Nocella.
The order will include 200 Boeing planes from the 737 Max series and 70 Airbus A321neos aircraft. Terms were not disclosed, but United Airlines is likely to receive a substantial discount for the order. The current list price for the order is more than $30 billion, but United Airlines may only have to pay half the price.
As the largest carrier at Denver International Airport, United has about 68,000 unionised workers, and it plans to create around 25,000 jobs in the next five years.
