Australia’s tourist hotspot to introduce visitor charges

Selfie lovers face fee to grab a snap at Northern Territory landmarks.

Travellers looking to post a selfie from one of Australia’s most famous locations will soon be looking at a hefty fee for the privilege.

The Northern Territory government is to begin charging visitors to purchase a park pass, at a cost of $25AUS (€16) for a tourist family; fees will vary but travellers from outside the region will have to buy a day pass, a two-week pass, or an open pass. The charges have been described as important for the “protection, maintenance and safety of the parks, and the creation of new visitor experiences”, with locals exempt from the pay-to-visit scheme.

The area includes tourist destinations such as Nitmiluk National Park, Karlu Karlu, the Devils Marbles Conservation Reserve, the Shoal Bay Coastal Reserve and the world-renowned hot springs at Elsey National Park, Mataranka – it includes some of Australia’s most popular swimming spots. The fees will be in addition to the charges incurred for camping and, in some cases, for walking.
