Boom in Camper Travel: Japan Becomes the New Trending Destination

Travel
Japan

With its diversity of coastal landscapes, mountain regions, hot springs, and places rich in tradition, Japan is developing into one of the most dynamic growth markets in international camping tourism.

Japan is increasingly developing into one of the most sought-after destinations for camping trips. While the country was long known primarily for metropolises such as Tokyo and Kyoto as well as for the cherry blossom season, more and more travelers are discovering the scenic and cultural diversity beyond the classic tourist routes. This is the finding of motorhome travel provider CamperDays.

According to the provider, Japan is currently the fastest-growing market in international camping tourism. Bookings increased by 135 percent between January and May 2026 compared with the same period last year.

Nature Experiences Beyond the Metropolises

The regions outside the major cities are particularly attractive for camper travelers. Over comparatively short distances, the country offers an extraordinary diversity of landscapes: from the coastlines of Hokkaido and the Japanese Alps to the subtropical landscapes of Kyushu.

Those traveling by camper can experience Japan’s many different facets with particular flexibility. Routes lead past coastal roads, mountain scenery, and traditional towns and villages. Added to this are the so-called Michi-no-Eki (literally translated as “roadside stations”), country-specific roadside facilities that not only offer travelers the opportunity to rest and refresh themselves, but also provide insight into local culture, regional specialties, and traditional craftsmanship.

New Trends in the Camping Market

The development in Japan is exemplary of a broader change in the camping market. While classic long-haul destinations such as the United States, Australia, and New Zealand continue to rank among the most popular destinations, interest in less established travel destinations is growing at the same time. These offer scenic diversity, authentic experiences, and new perspectives.
