Dubai introduces Vegas-style marriage laws
Gulf state allows non-Muslim couples to be granted license in 24 hours.
It remains unknown whether an Elvis impersonator will be on hand to conduct the ceremonies, but a new law that came into effect on February 1 allows non-Muslim couples in Dubai to obtain a wedding license in 24 hours.
The rule change is expected to see the popular holiday destination become the “Middle East answer to Las Vegas”, giving loved-up couples the chance to tie the knot at a day’s notice.
Those keen to take advantage of the new law will need a resident visa and a passport – the passport confirming the person’s nationality and that they are not less than 18 years of age.
The change brings Dubai in line with Abu Dhabi, a country that has seen a boom in couples arriving from a number of countries to marry at a day’s notice. The reforms are aimed at boosting foreign investment in a state that is home to nine million expats, including 250,000 Britons.
