Sicilian Wine Ambassador Lucio Tasca d'Almerita Dies

Sicily's wine world is in mourning – Count Lucio Tasca d'Almerita, who helped put the Italian region's wines on the map, has died at the age of 82.

Lucio Tasca d'Almerita was born in the Sicilian capital of Palermo on 9 January 1940 and was one of the great champions of Italian wines. He had a degree in economics and commerce and, as heir to a long agricultural tradition, dedicated himself to the development of the Regaleali family estate from 1961. When the Capofaro estate on the island of Salina was added later, along with Tascante on Mount Etna, the historic Whitaker estate on the ancient island of Mozia and Sallier de La Tour in Monreale, the company became Conte Tasca d'Almerita.

Lucio Tasca d'Almerita was one of the first in Sicily to believe in the region's potential for producing top quality wines and one of the first to focus on wine tourism. With these convictions, he was a pioneer in spreading Sicilian wine throughout the world, an international ambassador of Sicilian wine. In 1985, he was the first in Sicily to experiment with international varieties, forging a path that many followed.

Lucio Tasca d'Almerita also showed himself to be a far-sighted entrepreneur. Along with two other grandees of Sicilian wine – Diego Planeta and Antonio Rallo – he was one of the architects of the renaissance of Sicilian wine, founding the Assovini Sicilia, an association of Sicilian winemakers in 1998, an innovative and far-sighted project for its time.

Today, the Tasca d'Almerita wineries are run by his sons Beppe and Alberto Tasca d'Almerita.
