Urban wineries crop up everywhere from Portland to London and Hong Kong, while Bordeaux lends its name to a great wine region; but don’t expect to find many vines in these cities. It’s a different story in Vienna, where around 700 hectares of vineyard and 137 wineries lie within the city limits, with much of their output enjoyed at the local heurigen.
Look out especially for wines labelled Wiener Gemischter Satz DAC, unusual not just for their city origin, but for preserving Vienna’s proud heritage of field blends. Forget blending in the cellar, here it all happens in mixed vineyard plantings.
