The Falstaff wine advent calendar: Day 23

A few alternative pest control methods.

Vineyard managers around the world must guard their precious crop from a host of hungry pests. While chemical pesticides offer conventional protection, some growers prefer to deploy quirkier, more environmentally friendly tools. Cono Sur’s Chilean vineyards are patrolled by a gaggle of beetle-guzzling geese; while in Patagonia Bogedas Chacra enlists the help of local armadillos to munch vine-eating ants.

Up in California, Cakebread Cellars call in Rocky the Harris hawk as a deterrent to greedy starlings. Not all recruits are so endearing. Several Alsatian growers deploy Trichogramma “killer” wasps to tackle the damaging grapevine moth.
