Pokuplje

Croatia

Pokuplje is located in the northern hinterland of Croatia, west of Plesivica. In Germany, the area is also known as Kupa, named after the river of the same name that rises here and temporarily forms the border with Slovenia before flowing into the Sava River. The southern part of the region borders Bosnia and Herzegovina. Pokuplje is otherwise a rather unnoticed, unremarkable wine-growing region. Here prevails the continental climate characteristic of some parts of the northern hinterland of Croatia, with hot summers and cold winters. The production structure, which is dominated by very small wineries, is also typical: most of the winegrowers produce their wines on a sideline basis, the wines are mainly consumed in the region itself and are hardly ever exported. A particular speciality is Gewürztraminer, but in international comparison there is still a need to catch up in terms of quality. Otherwise, the vineyards are mainly planted with international white wine varieties. The next few years will show how much ageing potential the region really has.
