Fronsac & Canon Fronsac

France

The Fronsadais, as the two regions Fronsac and Canon Fronsac are collectively called, has become very popular among wine lovers in the last 20 years, because here you can get highly subtle Bordeaux wines, stylistically closer to Pomerol than to other origins of the Bordelais, for affordable money. It seems as if the two "satellites", as these peripheral areas of Bordeaux are also called, have only in recent years emerged from the shadow of the famous origins and come into the focus of Bordeaux lovers. In fact, however, the wines from Fronsac and Canon Fronsac were already known in France hundreds of years ago. The famous Cardinal Richelieu acquired land here in the 17th century and made sure that these wines were known and drunk at the royal court of Versailles. Fronsac and Canon Fronsac are located in the triangle formed by the Dordogne and Isle rivers. The northern border is formed by the famous appellations of Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. Together, the two origins have about 1,130 hectares of vineyards, with about 300 hectares of Canon Fronsac enclosed from northeast to northwest by that of Fronsac. The soils are mostly calcareous clay, and the two rivers have a moderating effect on climatic extremes. In recent years, both regions have experienced a great boom, as many investors, also from abroad, invested in vineyards and cellars, which increasingly develops the quality even higher. A big "engine" here is the famous Moueix trading house in Libourne. Both regions only produce red wines.
