Nördliche Ägäis

The island of Samos is the most important cultivated area in the Northern Aegean arena. Of a total 2,800 hectares, more than 1,500 hectares are on the island of Samos. The island lends its name to the local dessert wine produced from Muscat Blanc which accounts for 95% of all plantings, most of which are grown on tiered terraces called 'pezoules'. The second most important production area in the region is the island of Limnos. Muscat d'Alexandrie is widely planted in the central and southern parts of the island to give protection from the northerly winds. White wine styles vary from dry to semi-sweet. Less well-known are dry red wines made from Limnio (Kalampaki). The same grape is also used for aged sweet red wines which can either be made from sun-dried grapes, or fortified to the desired sweetness level.
