Bodegas y Vinedos Pujanza

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

The famous Rioja region is certainly not short of traditional wineries with a long history and some legendary wines. Founding a winery in recent times is a risk, but one that Carlos San Pedro took in 1998, confident that the name San Pedro carries weight and has a long history in Spanish viticulture. When he founded his winery, Carlos San Pedro was just 25 years old, but his vision of producing Rioja wines in the tradition of the region, without any newfangled frills, has never left him. Today, Carlos San Pedro and his Bodega Pujanza have over 40 hectares at their disposal, planted exclusively with Tempranillo and Viura. And the positioning of his vineyards near Laguardia, the capital of the Alevesa sub-region, is no coincidence. Here, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, there is a special mesoclimate with warm summers, but constant cooling at night, and long, cool autumns. This, combined with the altitude of the vines at up to 600 meters above sea level, ensures that the grapes take a long time to ripen, giving them time to extract plenty of nutrients and aromatic substances from the soil. Both white and red wines develop a fine, animating acidity and a mineral character. With his sustainable cultivation of his parcels, Carlos San Pedro also shows great responsibility towards posterity. Carlos San Pedro goes to any lengths to ensure quality. He has divided his 18-hectare Valdepoleo vineyard into many parcels, which he vinifies separately and only finally reassembles. Most of his wines are single-vineyard wines, with the exception of the white wine Anadas Frias, whose name means "cold vintage", a reference to the cool climate in this part of Rioja. One of its red wines contains strictly selected grapes from all of its vineyards as a kind of "entrée" into the world of Bodegas Pujanza, albeit at a level that others do not reach with their single-vineyard wines. Bodegas Pujanza has managed to mingle with the region's elite with its unique and, above all, original wines. Experts and journalists are full of praise and ennoble the wines with high ratings.
