Die ältesten Hinweise auf Weinberge für die Appellation Mâcon-Lugny stammen aus der ersten Hälfte des zehnten Jahrhunderts. Im Jahr 916 wird in einigen Aufzeichnungen die Schenkung eines Anwesens in Saint-Gengoux-de-Scissé durch die Abtei CLUNY erwähnt. Der Ursprung des Wortes "Crays" geht auf den keltischen Begriff "cracos" zurück, der "steiniger Hügel" bedeutet. Dieser mittelalterliche Begriff wird in Burgund mit steinigen Geröllhalden und Schwemmkegeln in Verbindung gebracht, die ein sehr gutes Substrat für den Weinbau bilden. Er bringt vor allem "premiers crus"-Weine hervor, die somit zu den besten Terroirs gehören: Les Crais und Les Cras in Marsannay, Les Crâs in Vougeot, Les Crays in Monthelie, Les Criots in Meursault, Les Cras in Beaune, Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet in Chassagne-Montrachet, usw.
