The "Aparthotel Il Momento" in the east of Bern opened at the end of September. In the in-house restaurant "Contra Corrente" ("against the current" in German), chef Angelo Palumbo presents Mediterranean cuisine. This seems to be proving popular: When we visit on a Friday evening, every table is taken. The industrial-chic restaurant exudes urban flair. As an amuse-bouche, we are served focaccia cubes with tomato tapenade by the attentive waitress. A glance at the menu promises Italian dishes with a twist. We start with crostini with salmon, stracciatella di burrata and pistachios crispy toasted in plenty of olive oil - a tasty combination. We also share a crunchy fennel salad with oranges, pomegranate and poppy seeds. The thinly sliced vegetables are beautifully presented and a suitable starter for the cold season. The compact wine list clearly focuses on Italian wines, but the selection of wines by the glass is a little too small. We skip the primi piatti, a nice selection of pasta and risotto dishes. The main course is a wonderfully tender fillet of beef in a strong three-pepper sauce with a creamy Parmesan risotto. Only the dessert is not quite convincing: tiramisu or panna cotta seem a bit ordinary to us, so it should be a torta di mele. However, this has run out, so we are recommended a pear tart instead. Between a hazelnut base and top is whipped cream with small pieces of pear, which is particularly sweet. Another tip for the warmer months: there is a lovely rooftop bar on the roof.
