"Don't believe the hype" may normally be good advice when choosing a restaurant, but the opposite applies to "Kanal 61". The new hotspot impresses across the board. Operators David Eckman and Jacques Voß create a feel-good atmosphere with wonderful ease, which is also reflected on the plates. They got to know each other at "Café Frieda" and ventured into self-employment with their restaurant at Erkelenzdamm 61 in August 2024. The dining room itself is a dream of dark wood, pine green and chrome. The menu features numerous little gems. As is currently the case almost everywhere, the focus is on sharing dishes. Snacks such as oysters with pomegranate juice or delicious sardines are the starters. A highlight is the excellent toast with mussels in a velvety escabeche sauce - a real treat for the palate. The combination of smooth sauce and intense mussels is perfect. Another highlight is the cockles with black beans and chilli crisp. This unexpected combination reveals its full charm from the very first bite: delicate sea flavour, creamy beans, a tart broth and the savoury heat of the chilli crisp with a hint of garlic. This is followed by a delicious smoked eel on potatoes and a beautifully presented whole mackerel, elegantly combined with beurre blanc and a spicy XO sauce that adds depth to the dish. The drinks menu focuses on natural wines from hyped producers and perfectly complements the gastronomic experience without appearing extravagant. The cordial, competent service makes for an all-round successful visit.
