The grape variety with the Spanish-sounding name is actually a new creation from Baden-Württemberg and comes from a crossing of the Blaufränkisch/Lemberger varieties with Dornfelder, carried out in 1971. However, it only received its final approval in 2002. The Acolon is quite resilient, powerful and vigorous and has the advantage of early ripening, especially for cool regions. In good locations it also produces quite good yields. Despite its recent approval, there are already almost 480 hectares under vines, 75 percent of which are in Württemberg and the rest in the Palatinate. In terms of its characteristics, it is very similar to one of its parents, the Blaufränkisch, and, like it, is suitable for aging in small oak barrels if it is of correspondingly good quality. Outside Germany, Acolon can still be found on around three hectares of vineyards in Switzerland.
