The Aleatico most likely comes from Tuscany, from where it spread increasingly to southern Italy, among other places. It is believed that the name comes from the word "luglio", the Italian word for "July", as the grapes begin to ripen in July. For a long time, a mutation of the Muscat à Petits Grains was suspected behind the early budding red wine variety, which ripens after a medium period, but it is more likely that it is a parent of that aromatic, fragrant variety. The Aleatico maintains close family ties to the Greco di Tufo. In the Marche the variety exists under the name Vernaccia di Pergola, named after the town of Pergola. The Aleatico is very susceptible to powdery mildew and also sour rot. Its main distribution area is in Lazio, where it represents a fragrant wine reminiscent of nutmeg, which is usually made as a sweet wine. In the Marche the Aleatico, here called Vernaccia di Pergola, had almost disappeared, but thanks to the initiative of some committed winemakers it is experiencing a small renaissance here. In the Marche, too, Aleatico is mostly used to produce sweet or noble sweet wines. On the island of Elba it is one of the long-established and important grape varieties. The Aleatico is also widespread on the island of Corsica. There are also small plantings in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and California.
