Bosco is one of the most important and traditional grape varieties in Liguria in the northwest of Italy. The famous sweet and fortified wine Sciacchetrà is particularly produced from Bosco. The name means something like “forest” or “woodland”. The grapes are quite loose, the berries are medium in size with thick skins. The Bosco is therefore well-armed against putrefactive diseases, but shows susceptibility to downy mildew and even more so to powdery mildew. The variety sprouts early to medium late and ripens in the medium-long segment. It is made as a pure variety, but even more common is the blend with Vermentino and Albarola. The entire harvest from the approximately hundred hectares under vines goes into the production of Sciacchetrà. In addition, it is still cultivated and expanded to a small extent in neighboring local DOCs.
This grape variety is also known by the name of:
Bosco Bianco, Bosco Bianco del Genovesato, Madea
