Fumin is an important grape variety in the Valle d'Aosta and also one of the oldest there. It was mentioned in writing under the name Fumen as early as 1785. Fumin is also the father of another variety from the valley, the Vuillermin. On the high, cool slopes of the Aosta Valley, Fumin ripens quite late. For a long time the populations in the valley remained fairly constant in a small area, but since the 1990s they have increased again. Fumin is usually made as a pure variety and also tolerates careful aging in barriques. The wines are very interesting and offer a pleasure beyond the mainstream. Important producers are the Les Cretes wine cooperative and the Grosjean Frères house. Fumin does not occur outside the Aosta Valley.
