Krassato

Red grape variety

The red wine variety Krassato is particularly native to the northwest of Greece, on the foothills of Mount Olympus, in the province of Larisa. Krassato is one of the important grape varieties for the Cuvée Rapsani. The grape variety, which is particularly susceptible to powdery mildew, is vigorous and quite productive with good, predictable harvests. The Krassato sprouts late and ripens late and forms medium-sized grapes with thick-skinned berries during the ripening period. It is usually blended with the Xinomavro and Stavroto grape varieties; pure Krassato wines are very rare. With reduced yields, it is also suitable for maturing and aging in small oak barrels. Nevertheless, the wines ultimately do not really have any greater ripeness and aging potential. In addition to Rapsani, the variety can also be found in Macedonia and Magnisia. There are no vineyards with this variety outside of Greece.
