This grape variety first made its career under the name Trollinger, but it actually comes from Alto Adige, where it is called Schiava Grossa, whose wines come onto the market under the name Vernatsch or Großvernatsch. After all, the name Trollinger refers to this origin, as it is probably a modification of the word Tirolinger. As Trollinger, the vine is a highly valued variety, especially in Württemberg, which is planted on almost 2,500 hectares. After a medium ripening period, the Trollinger produces an almost rosé-colored wine in the glass, but it is actually red wine. Its character is rather rustic and drinkable, but in Württemberg it is almost a kind of national drink, which is why you can hardly find it outside the country's borders. The Trollinger is quite undemanding in cultivation, but unfortunately it is very susceptible to rot and powdery mildew and downy mildew. But it is extremely frost-resistant. After Württemberg, South Tyrol has the second largest vineyard area with a good 1000 hectares, otherwise you can only find a few plots in Japan. What hardly anyone knows: The Trollinger was involved in many new breeds, the best known and most widespread being the Kerner.
