These are the best cities worldwide to live in – and they are also recommended for travellers.
Annually, the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), the research and analysis division of the media company Economist Group, conducts a list of places to live in the world, ranking them from best to worst. The ranking is based on stability, infrastructure, culture and environment, education and healthcare and contains 172 rated cities worldwide.
Here's a list of the top cities to live in according to the Global Liveability Index ranking by the EIU.
Number one, with an overall rating of 99.1 (out of 100), and therefore the best city to live in, is the Austrian capital, Vienna. It has regained its original rating from 2018 and 2019, having fallen back to 12th place last year. The highest ratings are given in the education, infrastructure, stability and healthcare categories with a score of 100, and the lowest, culture and environment, with 96.3.
Following in close second place is Copenhagen, Denmark, with an overall rating of 98.0. Compared to the Austrian capital, it is the healthcare, culture and environment categories have caused the city to fall behind Vienna.
Following Copenhagen is Zurich, Switzerland, which takes third place, with an overall rating of 96.3. According to the EIU, the best-rated category is healthcare with 100, while the worst-rated category in Switzerland is education, with a rating of only 91.7. However, Zurich has to share its position with Calgary, Canada, which also enjoys a rating of 96.3. Calgary has, compared to Zurich, three categories rated 100, healthcare, education and infrastructure, while culture and environment only receives a rating of 90.0.
Close behind Calgary in fourth place, comes another Canadian city, Vancouver (rating 96.1), followed by Geneva, Switzerland, in fifth place (rating 95.9).
In seventh place is the German city Frankfurt, with a rating of 95.7, followed by another Canadian city, Toronto (rating 95.4). The ranking concludes with Amsterdam, Netherlands, with a rating of 95.3, and Osaka, Japan, with a rating of 95.1, sharing 10th place with Melbourne, Australia in the top 10.
Causing Osaka to come last within the Top 10 most liveable cities are the culture and environment (83.1) and infrastructure (96.4) categories. For Melbourne, it’s stability (95.0), culture and environment (98.6) and healthcare (83.3) causing it to appear last on the last.
