Football club ditches plastic bottles in drive toward sustainability

UK

Wine will be served in cans after Ipswich Town signed deal with Vinca Wine.

While a trip to the football match is more associated with a half-time time pint of lager to wash down a pie, there are a growing number of supporters who are happier indulging in a drop of wine while watching their favourites from the stands.

And the growth in wine sales has seen one club look to move away from the single-use plastic bottles they’ve previously served their wine in, with Ipswich Town FC teaming up with Suffolk-based organic wine producer, Vinca Wine, the company supplying their drinks in recycled aluminium cans.

The League One outfit have already switched to biodegradable and recyclable paper cups at their Portman Road stadium, swapped plastic cutlery for wooden varieties, and use sauce dispensers rather than sachets.

The club have already reduced their plastic waste by 200,000 units per season, with the move to wine in cans rather than bottles from February 11, another step in the club’s desire to support environmental issues.
