The Champagne house’s non-vintage calling card, known for years as Brut Premier, was replaced last year with a different wine, named Collection 242 – denoting the house’s 242nd harvest after its foundation in 1776. This was based both on the 2017 vintage and 34% of a perpetual reserve started in 2012 for this purpose, with the rest made up of other long-aged reserve wines.

A new era

Last, year, when Collection 242 was launched, cellar master Jean Baptiste Lécaillon hailed this revolutionised concept “the multi-vintage of the 21st century.” You can read about its evolution here. One year later, the next edition, Collection 243, was launched, composed of 31% of this perpetual reserve which now contains years 2012-2017, 59% of base wines from the ripe and warm vintage of 2018 and 10% of reserve wines aged in oak. The final varietal blend is 42% Chardonnay, 40% Pinot Noir and 18% Pinot Meunier.

A stylistic echo

Collection 243 definitely follows in the footsteps of 242: it is equally ripe, fruity and textured, affording it beautiful, spicy depth and giving it a gastronomic edge.
