Seaside town tops Britain’s ‘happy’ list

UK

St. Ives in Cornwall takes No.1 spot in ‘Happy at Home’ index.

The north Cornish coastal town of St Ives, famous for its beautiful beaches and seafront Tate gallery, has been named as the happiest place to live in Britain.

The survey by Rightmove, the UK’s largest real estate property portal, asked more than 21,000 people across the UK how they felt about where they lived, with places ranked on factors including a sense of belonging, community spirit, proximity to green spaces and local amenities. St Ives came out on top, with residents highlighting how comfortable they feel to be themselves.

Last year’s winner, Hexham in Northumberland, came in fourth, with Galashiels in the Scottish borders in second spot. The happiest place to live in Wales was the island of Anglesey (seventh on the list).

While St Ives may be a happy place to live, it certainly isn’t a cheap place to buy a house, with prices soaring by six per cent in the last year – the average cost rising to £523,731 (€610,000), around £160,000 (€186,000) higher than the average asking price for a home across Britain.
