Safest airlines ranked
AirlineRatings.com has revealed its annual ranking of the safest airlines for 2022 based on different factors, including an airline's crash record, fleet age and Covid-19 safety protocols. Qantas lost the top spot on the website's list due to a near collision on an airport runway in Perth in 2018 (the report into the incident has only been released recently).
Top 10 safest airlines in the world:
- Air New Zealand
- Etihad Airways
- Qatar Airways
- Singapore Airlines
- TAP Air Portugal
- SAS
- Qantas
- Alaska Airlines
- EVA Air
- Virgin Australia/Atlantic
To earn the top spot in the list of nearly 400 airlines, Air New Zealand has operated in some of the most challenging weather conditions and remote environments, the airline ratings website said. The national carrier also excels at technical innovation and has one of the youngest aircraft fleets with an average age of 6.8 years. It was the first airline in the world to require domestic passengers to be vaccinated against Covid-19 or provide a negative test before boarding.
“Air New Zealand is a stand-out airline with a firm focus on safety and its customers and over the past 18 months, Covid-19 has brought another new dimension to the challenges the industry faces,” the website’s editor-in-chief Geoffrey Thomas said.
