Tokyo National Museum to Celebrate Its 150th Anniversary

2022 marks the 150th anniversary of the opening of the oldest museum in Japan. Special exhibitions and events will be held over the year starting April.

Japan’s oldest museum

In March 2022, Tokyo National Museum (TNM) will celebrate its 150th anniversary, making it the oldest national museum in Japan. Starting April 1, different events will be held and one of the major attractions is the special exhibition “National Treasures - The Complete Tokyo National Museum (TBC)” which will take place from October 18 to December 11. This is the first time in the history of the museum that all 89 of its national treasures will be on display, according to Go Tokyo.

Located in Ueno Park, Tokyo, the first and foremost art museum in Japan offers a great variety of Japanese art, including painting, sculpture, swords, pottery, Oriental art and much more. TNM is also home to over 120,000 "items," some of which are individual objects while others are collections numbering in the thousands. It is considered one of the largest art museums in the world.

The admission fee for adults is ¥1000/$9, while entry is free for under 18s and over 70s.
