Brand new Six Senses hotel opens in Rome

The luxury hotel brand’s latest property becomes its very first urban development in the heart of Rome, Italy.

Six Senses newest hotel which opened in March has been built inside the historic 15th century Palazzo Salviati Cesi Mellini and encompasses touches of both ancient and modern Rome, including 600-year-old columns and a baptismal bath dating back to the fourth century, carefully preserved under glass. The bath sits underneath the hotel’s restaurant BIVIUM, run by Chef Nadia Frisina, who serves fresh, local classics like pizzas topped with pear and mozzarella.

The menu is half plant-based while the remainder of dishes use traditional flavours from Frisnia’s home of Sicily, including pasta with red prawns and grilled seabass, plus a five-course tasting menu inspired by the Roman Empire.

For city views and late-night drinks, guests can also enjoy NOTOS Rooftop which opens this month. The roof area not only offers a bar and dining space, but also has an area for yoga in the summer, herb gardens for use in the kitchens and a selection of lemon and olive trees.

Marble and terracotta

Within the hotel are 96 guest rooms and suites, designed by Patricia Erquiola, which use local Traverstine stone, marble and terracotta, combined with modern amenities such as yoga mats and sustainable toiletries. Each room faces either the hotel’s leafy courtyard, Via di San Marcello or Via dell’Umiltà outside. The suites, such as the Salviati and Mellini Suites, are elevated further with spacious terraces overlooking the nearby church and separate living/dining areas. The spa at Six Senses Rome is already earning a reputation as one of the brand’s best yet. Designed in an ancient style using marble, low lighting and repetitive archways, it provides a modern version of Roman baths: a calidarium, tepidarium and frigidarium, along with sauna, steam room, a plethora of unique showers, salon, gym and meditation area. However, these are just an addition to the extensive menu available, from which guests can choose biohacking and sound therapy or visit the Alchemy Bar for herbal treatments.

Restoration of landmark

Six Senses kicked off its arrival in Rome before the hotel opened in March, sponsoring the restoration of its nearby landmark, the San Marcello al Corso church. It is also encouraging guests to learn more about the brand’s sustainable practices by offering interactive talks and workshops within the hotel’s Earth Lab which employs its own Sustainability Curator. For guests wishing to learn more about the culture and history on their doorstep, Six Senses has teamed up with Imago Travel to provide behind-the-scenes tours to some of the city’s best sights.

Six Senses is expanding rapidly as it becomes known as one of the best luxury hotel brands in the world, with existing properties in the Maldives, Bhutan and Fiji, among others. The greatly anticipated Six Senses London is also set to open in late 2023 within The Whiteley in Bayswater – this property will also include residences (available for up to 90 days per year) and a co-working space, along with various shopping and dining outlets.
