Easter strike will hit flights into and out of Heathrow

Airport bosses confirm a number of scheduled British Airways, BA, services will be affected by industrial action.

The strike action by security workers at Heathrow Airport over Easter will see around 32 flights a day cancelled, with the walkout by members of the Unite union beginning on March 31 and ending ten days later on April 9.

The dispute involves around 1,400 workers at Terminal 5, used by BA, along with those who check cargo at the airport, with Heathrow saying contingency plans have been put in place to ensure it can “operate as normal”.

That ‘normal operation’, however, will see BA reduce its schedule by five per cent on the strike days with a statement from the airline reading: “We’ve regrettably had to make a small number of adjustments to our schedule.”

Those whose flights to and from Heathrow are affected by the action will be contacted and given an option of either rebooking or offered a full refund. While additional staff will be available during the strike, the airport’s management team will also be providing assistance to passengers at the airport, with Heathrow bosses admitting it is likely to take “a little longer than usual to get through security”.
