Final part of £1.3billion airport expansion revealed

Work will see 80 per cent increase in Manchester Airport’s input to the economy.

One of the UK’s busiest airports will receive a £440million upgrade with the aim of “transforming the passenger experience”.

Manchester Airport Group (MAG) announced the extensive work to both the airfield and much of the internal infrastructure, with the development the final phase of a £1.3billion transformation of Terminal 2 that will see it double in size.

The work will create around 500 jobs, and it is expected to see the airport’s contribution to the economy increase by 80 per cent, from £3.5billion now to £6.3billion by 2040.

“This investment will maximise the contribution it (the airport) makes to creating a balanced and globally competitive UK economy,” said MAG chief executive Charlie Cornish. “I’m delighted to be announcing the go-ahead for the final phase which will open in 2025.”

As well as doubling the size of the existing departure lounge, new shops and restaurants will be opened, an additional security hall will be constructed, and there will be a new dual taxiway system to improve airfield efficiency.

Once the work on Terminal 2 has been completed, Terminal 1 will be closed.
