Meghan Markle's single skillet spaghetti: why it's going viral
Although the Netflix series "With Love, Meghan" has been panned for its lack of orginality, one of her recipes in particular seems to be getting a lot of attention.
Meghan Markle, the former actress and current Duchess of Sussex has recently demonstrated a sense of innovation that many an entrepreneur could learn from. No stranger to heavy scrutiny, her current project, the cooking show "With Love, Meghan" on Netflix has come under fire for a percieved lack of originality. Offering a mix of culinary tips, personal anecdotes and stylish pointers for hosting in lieu of the haute cuisine many viewer hoped for, its simplicity may also be its greatest asset.
One stop cooking
One example is Markle's take on pasta: She introduces her "Single Skillet Spaghetti" right at the start of the series, stating it is often prepared by her for her family as it is "healthy and hearty". This recipe is currently going viral, making waves as it requires neither hard-to-find ingredients nor complicated preparation.
In addition to spaghetti, the dish contains red and yellow cherry tomatos, kosher salt, extra virgin olive oil, garlic, lemon zest, coarsely chopped lacinato kale, rocket and parmesan. As the name suggests, this is a one-pot dish: Simply place all the ingredients in a medium-sized saucepan and cook together until the pasta is al dente.
Pasta Plagiarism?
The fact that this recipe has attracted so much attention could also stem from the fact that some foodies have discovered strong similarities to a recipe by British chef Anna Jones. Her dish was published in a cookbook around ten years ago and used on Meghan's show with minor adaptations, but without crediting the author – much to the delight of Markle's detractors. Whether the dish's current popularity is thanks to this supposed "recipe theft" or simply because the pasta is delicious – one thing is certain: Single Skillet Spaghetti is causing a stir online.
