New Don Melchor 2020 vintage released

Concha y Toro ahs released the latest vintage of its flagship wine Don Melchor.

First produced in 1987, Don Melchor now is made from vines that are over 30 years old. It has been an ambitious project in Puente Alto in Chile’s Maipo Valley.

A special site

The particularly cool site at an altitude of 650m was first planted in 1979 with successive plantings until 1992 – and these vines are now deeply rooted in the stony soils. Further plantings were made in 2004-2017 at a higher planting density. The aim was always to express the quality of Cabernet Sauvignon in Chile – but what it does express even more so is a sense of elegance.

The 2020 vintage

2020 was a hot and very dry vintage in Chile which prompted an earlier harvest – but cold nights ensured freshness in the grapes. Winemaker Enrique Tirado says: “The timely harvest of grapes in 2020 helped us obtain top-quality wines. Wines with great concentration and ripeness, retaining the freshness and vivacity of the different plots of Cabernet Sauvignon. These are well-balanced and energetic wines, with elegant texture, which express different aromas and flavours, making it possible to create a great Don Melchor 2020.”
