Every year, an international jury on behalf of the European Parliament awards a prize to the "European Christmas Capital". In 2025, the main title went to Vilnius - now the winners for 2026 have also been announced.

Every year, a jury from the "Christmas Cities Network" meets on behalf of the European Parliament to determine the new Christmas capital. The award recognizes cities that keep the Christmas spirit alive with special cultural projects and initiatives. Vilnius was awarded the title for 2025 - and in 2026 it will go much further south.

Europe's Christmas capital 2026 is Barcelona

The award honored the unique Christmas landscape of the Mediterranean metropolis, where centuries-old traditions meet a diverse, multicultural identity. The city's sustainable approach - with energy-saving lighting, environmentally friendly markets, workshops and initiatives that collect Christmas trees and natural decorations after the holidays - is also highlighted in a particularly positive light.

Christmas highlights in Barcelona

In the run-up to Christmas, Barcelona lights up with music, Christmas fairs, festive markets and magnificent decorations. Highlights include the Three Kings Parade, Christmas concerts, the Santa Llúcia Mass and the magical moment when the city lights are switched on.

In addition to the title of "European Christmas Capital" , awards will be presented in two other categories: "European Christmas City" (10,000-100,000 inhabitants) and "European Christmas Village" (under 10,000 inhabitants).

European Christmas Town" and "Christmas Village" awards

Wels in Austria was chosen as the "European Christmas City" for 2026. Every year, the town is transformed into a dream destination with traditions, Alpine village architecture and a warm, family atmosphere. Particularly popular during the festive season are the Christmas lights route, the Christmas market in the center of Wels, a Perchten parade and the magical world in Pollheimer Park.

Kirkop can call itself the "European Christmas Village 2026". The small village in Malta preserves its deep-rooted traditions and celebrates Christmas with a warm, creative and innovative spirit. Particularly worth seeing are the path of lights from Triq San Benedetti to Triq Santu Rokku, living nativity scenes and workshops to learn how to make traditional Maltese Christmas treats.
