4Kilos Vinícola

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

Perhaps one of the most spectacular new wineries to be founded in Spain in the 21st century is the "4Kilos" winery on Mallorca, which has moved the beautiful vacation island another step closer to the top European regions. And it only took a few years for this newly founded winery to gain a legendary reputation both inside and outside Spain. In the process, "4Kilos" has proven that a large budget is not necessarily required to get started. Friends Francesc Grimalt, oenological director of the flagship winery Anima Negra, and musician Sergio Caballero were united by a great love of wine, which led to the desire to found their own winery. The two wine enthusiasts had just 4 million pesos (approx. €24,000), colloquially known as "4 kilos", at their disposal as start-up capital. This was just enough to vinify the first vintages in a small garage. As early as 2009, the renowned Spanish wine guide Guia Penin named 4Kilos Vinicola "Spanish Winery of the Year" and after that, their ascent to the Olympus of the Spanish winegrowing elite was unstoppable. The two friends have retained their boundless passion, but have swapped their garage for a former sheep farm, where they now find much more professional conditions. Their parcels are spread across the north and south of the island and are cultivated according to organic criteria. It goes without saying that the two founders primarily cultivate the classic Mallorcan grape varieties, Gallet and Mantonegro for the red wines, Prensal Blanc and Malvasia for the white wines, which grow on just 15 hectares. Small proportions of Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot also flow into the blend of the red wine "12 Volt". In contrast to other producers, the barrels do not bear numbers, but the names of musicians, bands or individualistic titles. The way in which musical styles that otherwise seem to be less compatible can be harmoniously combined can be tasted here. There is no question that the wines from "4Kilos" are causing a sensation and have written a piece of Mallorcan winemaking history.
