Bodegas Vetus

Falstaff Online Österreich 2023

With its Artevino group, the Antón family is certainly one of the heavyweights in Spain, as the group owns Bodegas Izadi and Bodegas Orben in Rioja, as well as Finca Villacreces in Ribera del Duero, important protagonists in their respective regions. However, this did not stop the family from looking elsewhere and setting up elsewhere, and so they turned their attention to the up-and-coming Toro region, which Robert Parker has already described as "the promised land of Spanish wines". In 2003, the family took the first vineyards under their wings, and today the estate has grown to 20 hectares in the best locations in the region. In 2008, an impressive winery was opened under the name Bodegas Vetus. The parcels are located in a very special corner of the Toro region, where the continental climate hits particularly hard with warm days and particularly cool nights. But it is precisely these large differences between day and night that give the grapes a particularly intense development of aromas, which makes the wines appear so multi-layered and complex. This is also due to the altitude of 700 meters above sea level and the ideal terroir for Tempranillo, which consists of limestone on a sandy subsoil. The vineyards are cultivated particularly carefully and sustainably. The family's great love is for Tinta de Toro, the predominant variety of Tempranillo here, but some Garnacha is also cultivated. In the immediate neighbour Rueda, a single-varietal Verdejo is produced, which is considered the flagship of the region. The showpiece of the bodega is a small plot of land called "Camparrón", which actually still contains vines with their original roots from the time before the great phylloxera catastrophe. The wine produced from these vines is one of the best in the region, and its price is quite measured for a wine of this quality. But the other wines are also impressive and are characterised above all by an excellent price/enjoyment ratio.
