Josef Jamek - a name that embodies the cultural landscape of the Wachau and the renaissance of Austrian wine culture like no other. As early as the 1950s, his natural dry wines and vision shaped the style of white wine in the Wachau, and he was the founder of Vinea Wachau, the association that protects the wines of this unique region.
With 25 hectares of vineyards, the winery is one of the most respected private estates in the region, cultivating vineyards on the best terraces of ancient rock. The Klaus vineyard, synonymous with the Jamek winery, is situated on a steep slope with over a hundred stone terraces. This is where Jamek's flagship Wachau Riesling has been produced for decades. The Jamek family has been bottling this wine jewel (which can be seen as a parable of Josef Jamek's great life's work) since 1959. The primary rock terraces of the Achleiten and Liebenberg sites are also renowned for their top-quality Grüner Veltliners, which are characterised by the terroir of the Wachau. The Hochrain and Zweikreuzgarten vineyards in Wösendorf have been cultivated in partnership with the Benedictine Abbey of Melk for over 40 years. Here, the highest quality Pinot Blanc and Grüner Veltliner are grown.
Since 2012, Jamek's granddaughter Julia Jamek and her husband Herwig have continued the winery's tradition. Both are medical doctors and guarantee the sustainable health of the wines! The best place to taste the wines is in the winery's restaurant, run by Johannes Altmann, another grandson of Josef and Edeltraud Jamek. A visit to the Jamek-Altmann estate is a unique and unmissable experience for any visitor to the Wachau region, with the excellent regional cuisine and wines by the glass to be enjoyed in the charming atmosphere of the 100-year-old house and its enchanting garden.
