Falstaff Wineguide Austria/South Tyrol 2021/22

The Krutzler winery is now run by the fifth generation. The first quality wines were bottled in 1966 and to this day the winery is committed only to producing only the best. The family business traditionally works almost exclusively with red wines on about 13 hectares of vineyards around Deutsch Schützen and Eisenberg. Here, the focus is on one grape in particular, Blaufränkisch. Climatic peculiarities and the formative terroirs are first and foremost in Krutzler's winemaking philosophy, theirs is not a quest for fashionable wines without edges or corners, but rather the search for the stylistic soul of the variety. The vineyards are all located in a south-southeast facing basin, surrounded by forest. Mineral, iron-rich loam and slate soils are found in this micro-climate. The terroir, long vegetation period and low yields produce wines with originality and character.

The very best vineyards in Deutsch Schützen and on the nearby Eisenberg are the basis for the Eisenberg DAC Reserve; vines that are at least 25 years old with longer barrel ageing are the basis for this profound, savoury mineral wine. From careful selection of the best Blaufränkisch grapes from each vintage, the Blaufränkisch "Perwolff", the renowned flagship of the house, is also aged in oak barrels. This enduring top wine of takes its name the old thirteenth century name for the site and with increasing bottle ageing, it delights the palate with suppleness and elegance.
