New pilgrimage route: Way of St. James for Mallorca
Whether you are looking to go on a pilgrimage, hiking or simply want to slow down: Mallorca is planning a new Way of St. James that will run through ten municipalities on the island.
Mallorca is mostly known for physical pleasures and less for spiritual stays - especially among German vacationers. This is about to change now, as the Balearic island will have its own Way of St. James from 2026 onwards.
67-kilometer pilgrimage route to be created in Mallorca
Until now, the Way of St. James across the island of Mallorca was only a few kilometers long. In future, pilgrims will be able to hike 67 kilometers across the Balearic island.
According to the German-language weekly newspaper "Mallorca Zeitung", the Mallorca Island Council recently presented the planned hiking route. It will start at the famous monastery "Santuari de Santa Maria de Lluc" in Escorca in the north of the island and finish at the church "Sant Jaume" in the center of Palma de Mallorca. The course is dedicated to St. James the Apostle, the patron saint of all pilgrims on the Way of St. James.
Route through ten Mallorcan municipalities
The route passes through a total of ten municipalities: Escorca, Caimari, Selva, Inca, Lloseta, Binissalem, Alaró, Consell, Santa Maria del Camí, Marratxí (including the districts of sa Cabaneta and Pòrtol) and Palma. The trail can be covered in various stages and over several days.
The route will be marked throughout and divided into stages to make the hike safe and easy. The municipal association Felib also announced that pilgrims can collect stamps for each of the towns crossed in their "Credencial del Peregrino" (pilgrim's identity card).
Camino de Santiago around the world
The "Way of St. James" is usually understood to be the so-called Camino Francés, the main route through northern Spain. Pilgrims have been walking to the tomb of St. James the Apostle in the Spanish city of Santiago de Compostela for over 1000 years. However, there are many other Ways of St. James in the world, which lead through different countries and are of different lengths.
