Stockholm Crowns a New Sommelier Champion
Sweden’s top sommeliers gathered in the capital on April 18–19 for the 2026 Swedish Sommelier Championship, hosted by the Swedish Sommelier Association. After two demanding days of competition, Martin Mortensen of Vinkällaren Grappe emerged as the new national champion.
Ten candidates from across the country were put through a rigorous series of practical and theoretical challenges, including blind tastings, decanting, food and wine pairing, in-depth written exams, and high-pressure service tasks. Designed to mirror real restaurant scenarios, the competition tested not only technical expertise but also composure, decision-making, and broad product knowledge spanning wine, beer, cocktails, coffee, fruit wines, and gastronomy.
In the final, Mortensen impressed with his calm precision and experience under pressure—qualities that secured him the title. No stranger to the podium, he previously won the Nordic Championships and has collected multiple finalist placements. Following a sabbatical year, his return marks a decisive and celebrated comeback.
With the victory, Mortensen also reclaims his place in the Swedish sommelier team, Swesomm. He is joined by silver medallist Isak Lauridsen of Restaurant Adam Albin and bronze medallist Ellen Lindegren of Restaurant Gondolen.
Lauridsen and Lindegren will now set their sights on the upcoming Nordic Championships in Iceland this September—where Mortensen, as a former winner, will compete out of contention.
