Turmeric: the golden immune booster
Even ancient Ayurvedic healers swore by the power of turmeric—and today, the golden root has found its way into countless cafés in the form of “Golden Milk.” But what can this radiant powder really do?
Whether known as turmeric, Indian saffron, or yellow root, this golden spice goes by many names—and can be used in just as many ways. The intensely colored root originates in South Asia, where it has been prized for centuries: as a remedy in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and as a natural coloring and flavoring agent in the kitchen.
The main cultivation areas are in India, which not only produces most of the world’s turmeric but also consumes around 80 percent of the global harvest. In Europe, the root was long known mainly as an ingredient in curry powder or as a natural food colorant (E100). But growing interest in natural remedies and holistic nutrition has brought turmeric into the wellness spotlight—especially in drinks like the “golden milk,” a favorite in the plant-based scene.
The Golden Root in Detail
The main active compound in turmeric is curcumin, which gives the root both its brilliant hue and its reputation as a natural remedy. Scientists attribute two key properties to curcumin: antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It helps neutralize free radicals and may ease mild inflammation, supporting overall well-being—particularly in cases of rheumatic discomfort, digestive complaints, or bloating.
Important to note: Turmeric’s effects are not immediate but appear with regular use.
On its own, however, curcumin is poorly absorbed by the body. Combining it with fat, such as oil or milk, significantly improves its bioavailability. Black pepper also contains piperine, a compound that helps the body absorb curcumin more efficiently. This is why golden milk—a warming blend of (plant‑based) milk, turmeric, ginger, pepper, and sometimes cinnamon or honey—is considered the ideal way to enjoy turmeric. Comforting and beneficial, it’s more than just a modern trend when prepared the right way.
