The Blauer Portugieser is an old red grape variety and a widespread grape with numerous synonyms in the Danube region and throughout southeastern Europe. A usually simple ruby red wine is made from the variety, which is characterized by a fresh acidity and a light body in the taste. It is often also made as a rosé (Weißherbst). The wine is considered pleasantly drinkable, fresh and full-bodied and played a similar role as a bottle wine in the Palatinate to Trollinger in Württemberg. It goes well with light dishes. After long maceration and aging in barriques, Portuguese wines from vineyards with reduced yields can also produce heavy and rich red wines of higher quality. The grape variety is approved for the production of selection wines in Rheinhessen.
