Freisamer

White grape variety

The Freisamer is one of the oldest German crosses. It was created under the direction of Karl Müller in Freiburg in 1916 from Silvaner and Pinot Gris. The name is derived from the name of the city of Freiburg and the Dreisam river that flows through it. The grape variety never achieved greater importance; today there are only four hectares left under vines in Germany's home country of Baden-Württemberg. The variety ripens medium to late and still produces a relatively high and striking level of acidity, but the fruit is fairly neutral and restrained. In order to really produce quality, it needs to be fully ripe with a high sugar level and must weight. The Freisamer does not place any special demands on the soil and therefore thrives excellently on a wide variety of terroirs.
