Even in today's modern and scientifically influenced world, there are grape varieties whose origins we know absolutely nothing about - the Frühburgunder is one of them. There are two things that are certain: Frühburgunder is a mutation of Pinot Noir, and it ripens at least 14 days earlier than Pinot Noir, which may have given it its name. It was already known under various synonyms in the 18th century; it was first mentioned in Germany under its current name in 1824. In contrast to Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir has a thicker skin and is therefore much less sensitive to putrefactive diseases, but is susceptible to dripping. The medium-ripening grape variety usually produces only small yields, which made it uninteresting in Germany, especially in the 1950s and 1960s. After it was almost extinct, its enormous potential was recognized towards the end of the century, so that today there are a good 260 hectares of Pinot Noir vines in Germany. The best Early Burgundy comes from the Ahr region, which is why it is considered the center of this variety. There are also larger areas in Rheinhessen and the Palatinate. The Pinot Noir is similar in smell and taste to the Pinot Noir, but does not quite have the same ripeness and aging potential. The best qualities tolerate aging in barriques excellently. Outside Germany, there are promising trials with this variety in England.
