Inzolia is a synonym for the well-known grape variety Ansonica. Inzolia is a long-established grape variety, especially in Sicily, and has been grown there since the 16th century as well as in Tuscany, where it is known under the name Ansonica. However, the Inzolia plays almost no role in central Italy today. Its origin is not clear. The grape variety was previously thought to have originated in Sicily, from where it was brought to Tuscany, but also to the islands of Sardinia and Elba. This is proven by family similarities to other Sicilian grape varieties such as Grillo, Frappato or Nerello Mascalese. However, recent research suggests its origin in Greece, as relationships to Greek varieties such as Sideritis and Roditis could suggest. The Inzolia is very suitable for warm and dry Sicily, as it is not prone to drought stress even under warm conditions. However, it is extremely susceptible to downy mildew. The variety sprouts early and also develops early vine flowers. Ripening occurs after a short to medium-long ripening period. Since it breaks down its acid very quickly in the final stretch of maturity, care must be taken to harvest the fruit at the right time. Today, the Inzolia is most widely distributed in Sicily, although it can still be found sporadically to a small extent in southern Italy.
