Liatiko

Red grape variety

Liatiko is a very important red wine variety on the island of Crete, and in all probability it also comes from the island. The name is a shortened form of the word "Iouliatiko", which means "July" and is a reference to the early ripeness of this grape variety. This is vigorous and usually delivers good yields. The Liatiko reacts sensitively to excessive heat and is susceptible to powdery mildew, sour rot and other diseases caused by viral infections. It sprouts early to medium and ripens quite early. The Liatiko develops medium-sized grapes with medium to larger berries. Over 2000 hectares are under vines on Crete. The wine that these produce is characterized by a relatively pale red color, and the Liatiko also loses further depth of color as it matures. It is therefore often blended with the Mandilaria grape variety, which gives it more intensity in terms of color. However, the wines are of good quality, can continue to refine in the bottle and have decent aging potential. Their character is primarily reminiscent of Pinot Noir and Nebbiolo. The Liatiko is pure and dry, but is also blended with grape varieties such as Syrah or Cabernet Sauvignon for the international market. In addition, some producers also produce sweet wines from dried grapes. There are no vineyards of this variety outside of Crete.
