The white wine variety Plavec is actually called Plavec Zuti in its entirety. "Zuti" means something like "yellow", which is a reference to the color of the berries when they are fully ripe. Plavec is a long-established grape variety, especially in northern Croatia and southern Slovenia. Plavec grapes used to be marketed as table grapes, although the sugar content of the large berries is rather moderate. Wine production of this variety dates back to more recent times. The wines of Plavec, which is susceptible to powdery mildew, are rather light and neutral, but with rigorous yield restrictions, higher quality qualities are achieved, especially if they are made using pure varieties. Because of its good acidity, Plavec is also suitable for producing sparkling wines and is otherwise used as part of a cuvée. In Croatia, Plavec is native to the regions around Zagreb, i.e. Continentalna Hrvatska, Plesivica, Prigorje-Bilogora and Pokuplje. The variety can also be found in Slovenia in the Posavje and Stajerska regions under the name Riumeni Plavec. The vineyard area in Croatia is around 15 hectares, while in Slovenia it is around 60 hectares. No other occurrences of Plavec are known.
