This grape variety can at least be adorned with the name of the legendary diamond "Le Regent", which Philip II wore in his crown on the occasion of his enthronement and which was later allowed to adorn Napoleon Bonaparte's sword. The Regent was created from the not uncomplicated crossing of a grape variety called Diana, itself a cross, and the French Chambourcin. The Regent sprouts relatively late and ripens early - one of the goals of this crossing - and it is - another goal of the crossing - relatively resistant to fungal infestation as well as powdery mildew and downy mildew. In 1996, the grape variety was finally entered into the variety register, and since then, due to the increasing demand for red wines, the area under vines has increased rapidly to over 2,000 hectares compared to the area at that time (around ten hectares). Centers of Regent cultivation are Rheinhessen, the Palatinate and Baden. Regent brings an intense, deep red color to the glass. Since the variety has a mild acidity with a considerable tannin content, the wines appear velvety and flattering. The best Regent wines are also well suited for aging in barriques.
