Torrontes

White grape variety

The Torrontes grape variety is perhaps the most interesting white wine variety in Argentina because of its decidedly fruity character, but its name causes a lot of confusion. The name Torrontes is also used in Spain and Portugal, but here for a large number of very different grape varieties, all of which, as has now been proven, have nothing in common with the Argentine variety. The Torrontes are available in Argentina in three variants, as Torrontes Mendocino, Torrontes Sanjuanino and Torrontes Riojano, the latter being considered the highest quality; the names allude to the areas of origin. All variants are natural crosses of the Muscat of Alexandria variety with the Listan Prieto variety, known in Argentina as Criolla. The Torrontes is strong and vigorous, produces good yields, but is unfortunately susceptible to powdery mildew and sour rot. When it sprouts, it is in the middle segment and ripens relatively early. Characteristic of Torrontes is its aroma, which is strongly reminiscent of nutmeg and fresh grape skins, and is sometimes even reminiscent of Gewürztraminer. In Argentina there are around 11,700 hectares in production, outside of Argentina there are a few vineyards, for example in Chile.
